Decatur FC’s June 27 season finale against second-place Chattanooga FC – named by the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) as the National Matchup of the Week – was delayed multiple times and ultimately canceled due to thunderstorms in the Atlanta area.
The season may have ended abruptly, but Decatur finished the season undefeated with a 7-0-0 record. In just their second year in the WPSL, the team was able to clinch their first Peachtree Division title.
“It really shows how much hard work everyone has put in, from the players, and coaches on field, to the staff working behind the scenes,” Decatur FC General Manager Joel Gould said in a press release. “It’s been a real team effort, and seeing it all pay off like this means a lot to everyone involved.”
Decatur FC dominated their competition offensively throughout the season, scoring a total of 23 goals, which is 11 more than second-place Chattanooga FC. Forward Maggie Wadsworth led the team with six goals, followed by forwards Dylan Driver and Sarah Greiner who both had four.
Decatur FC also had a strong defensive season, only letting in seven goals throughout their run. Goalkeeper Nikki Bidun held down the fort for the defense, starting every game and having an impressive 1.0 goals against average.
“We had roughly two practices before the season kicked off,” Gould said in the release. “So getting all the players to gel that quickly – and then achieve success right out of the gate – is a real testament to the talent Coach Campbell [Chapman] and his staff have brought together.”
