Kappa Alpha Psi member killed in Coan Park shooting

A Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity brother is dead after a fatal shooting at Coan Park in Southeast Atlanta on June 28.

According to a report from the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded at 8:14 p.m. on Saturday to the park near East Atlanta Village in reference to several persons shot.

Upon arrival, officers located two men and two women who had all sustained gunshot wounds.

Michael Pearson, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Justin Minnitee, 23, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries. The two women, ages 30 and 20, self-transported to the hospital in stable condition.

According to the report, Minnitee arrived uninvited to the picnic and got into an altercation with some of the fraternity brothers. He then pulled a gun and started firing, shooting Pearson in the head. Other attendees pulled weapons and fired at Minnitee, striking him multiple times, according to witnesses.

The investigation continues.
